Summer camps are held every year with the participation of about 60 youths from the border area. Each year a theme is chosen from the Children’s Rights law and is the focal point around which the camp activities are programmed. Past themes have been: Non-Violence against Children, Non-discrimination, environment conservation, among others. The camp activity is based on quantum methodology, which aims to enhance the learning capabilities of children in schools. In addition, each year a group of youth leaders from the area serve as mentors to carry out the activities, with prior training of the group in leadership and group management, which in turn prepares them for their work as leaders in their communities.

Save the Children has taken on the challenging ground-breaking task of: creating a certification of no child labor which was originally directed to the sugarcane industry to be applied in any other company or industry. The objective is to define guidelines on how to make a viable social audit on production that helps to protect children from exploitation and to ensure owners and administrators are not using children in the production processes.

For purposes of recognition and impact on issues on children’s rights in the Dominican Republic, we play an important role in the launching and presentation at a national level of the UN Study on Violence against Children and Adolescents (event held in 27 April 2007, organized in the country by UNICEF, Save the Children, World Vision and Plan International). We took part in this study at a regional level by participating in the process of consulting children and young Dominicans thereby producing data for the study; and at the international level Save the Children is the leading agency in promoting and monitoring the study. Child participation is a fundamental principle for Save the Children. To strengthen the participation of young people from the border there has been exchanges between Dominican and Nicaraguan adolescents, hands-on training for youth leaders in audio-visual production techniques which was focused on children's rights. A video was produced and developed denouncing the involvement of children in cockfighting arenas by the participants was the result of the first encounter.

To strengthen the role of Save the Children as advocates for the Rights of Children; Save the Children República Dominicana is currently an active member of the NGO Coalition for Children as part of the coordinating team for this organization. At the regional level, Save the Children Latin America is part of the Professional Network Exchange on Violence against Children, and also the groups that combats against children’s physical punishment and humiliation. In addition, staff members receive continuous training on Children’s Rights Program (CRP) and Child Protection. Also Save the Children staff is trained at an international level on issues ranging from updating child protection methods, emergency response focused on the rights of the child, encouraging the participation of children and adolescents in matters pertaining to their municipalities, etc.
